Bakuto Robata & Izakaya

Project Role: Principal Architect

Photography: Josh Goetz

This design challenge was to marry the elegance of traditional Japanese architectural techniques with the grungy, pseudo-industrial aesthetic of the Bakuto - ultimately arriving at an Izakaya that celebrates both aspects. Through clean line-work demonstrated in the soffits and various rebar ‘fusumas’ (sliding/porous walls), and deliberate material / color choices - the warmth of natural woods contrasting the various distressed metals with a colorful splash of some incredible local tattoo art - we were able to strike that balance.
